Does Hypnosis Work?

April 11, 20252 min read

I ask people to manage their expectations but those who believe that they can be fixed are always a problem. This is why.

There is unrealistic belief that the person will lose control and blindly accept any suggestions that I give them. They think that they are like puppets and I can do whatever I desire. This is absolutely not true.

Some people think they should experience nothingness such as in sleep where they close their eyes and when they open them again they are a different person. Instead it is a heightened state of consciousness and they do hear and remember everything.

Those who seek a magic bullet will most often be disappointed, especially since nothing changes except for the person's perception of the way they approach things.

If a person beliefs that they all have to respond in the same way as what they saw in a movie, we would have many zombies walking around. Some people yawn a lot, others belch, some people twitch and others are like statues and do not move at all.

If a person has an unusual side effect such as dizziness, they can open their eyes and ask for the session to end. They are in full control.

The reason I wrote this blog, is because some people hope that they can erase a life long series of issues with one session. I always suggest 5 sessions and then we re-evaluate but those who do not give the opportunity to do 5 are those who always complain. The question I always ask is whether hypnosis did not work or whether the individual expected such a drastic change to occur immediately that they felt disappointed by the outcome. Would it be realistic for someone who has 100 lbs of body weight to release to do it overnight? Of course not, it is one day at a time. The same is true with hypnosis.

I recently updated my website with what I thought was a great metaphor. The mind is like a vegetable garden. If left unattended for a long time it fills in with deep rooted weeds that choke out any possibility of growing a crop. What you then have to do to be successful, is pull out the weeds and the roots. In hypnosis we do the same thing by releasing non-beneficial beliefs and thoughts. Then you would prep the soil and add fertilizer. In hypnosis we start boosting positive emotions and expectations. When the seeds are finally planted it is similar to adding direct suggestions to the subconscious. Those seeds (ideas) will germinate and eventually take root. It may take a week or a month before you see a healthy plant. In the meantime you need to water and nurture the plants and as you do the same you will be healthy again. It does take multiple sessions to get great results.
