faces of pain

Understanding the Two Faces of Pain

December 29, 20255 min read

The human body possesses an incredibly advanced survival toolkit, and pain is its primary alarm system. In its healthy state, pain is vital; it is the biological "stop sign" that prevents further injury when we encounter heat or physical trauma. This immediate feedback ensures we pull back, seek safety, and begin the healing process.

However, the nature of pain changes when it outstays its welcome. If discomfort continues long after the physical wound has closed, it ceases to be a protector and instead becomes a limiting force. This lingering distress traps the mind in a state of high alert, causing us to live in a constant shadow of anxiety—dreading future catastrophes that may never happen. In this state, the nervous system remains stuck in a "fight or flight" loop, preventing us from experiencing the true joys of daily life.

The Hidden Secondary Gains

It can be difficult to admit, but sometimes pain lingers because of the subtle advantages it provides the subconscious mind. These are known as "secondary gains," and they can make the prospect of recovery feel surprisingly vulnerable. These benefits might include:

·Relief from burdensome or unpleasant responsibilities.

·The continued security of insurance or disability payments.

·A protective shield against demanding social or family obligations.

Imagine the subconscious fear: If the pain vanishes today, what happens to the support system it created? When the mind perceives these benefits as necessary for survival, the pain becomes somatic—physically anchored in the body. It acts as a warehouse for emotional weight, remaining locked in the tissues until the individual feels a profound sense of safety.

Rewiring the Body with EFT Tapping

To address this "trapped" energy, we utilize Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT), or tapping. By physically stimulating specific meridian points while mentally focusing on the distress, we send a calming signal directly to the brain.

EFT is not just a theory; it is backed by over 200 clinical studies. This evidence-based practice has been shown to:

·Significantly lower or eliminate chronic physical pain.

·Dissolve the heavy clouds of anxiety and depression.

·Drastically reduce cortisol, the body’s primary stress hormone.

When integrated into a daily practice, tapping does more than just soothe the mind; it assists in regulating blood pressure and calming systemic inflammation, addressing the very roots of chronic illness.

A Mindset Reset: Your Path Forward

Our sessions are uniquely designed to peel back the emotional layers stored within your body. By blending EFT with targeted hypnotic suggestion, we achieve a complete mindset reset.

This process doesn't erase your memories; rather, it changes your relationship with them. You will retain the wisdom of your experiences, but you will no longer be triggered by the old "red alerts." You can finally move through the world with a sense of calm and control.

If you are ready to release the weight and step into a new way of living, I am here to guide you.

As a bonus here is a tapping script you can use if you are experiencing tension in the upper back or neck

This tapping script is designed to help you release physical tension while addressing the underlying stress that often "settles" in the upper body. Before starting, rate the intensity of your neck and shoulder pain on a scale of 0 to 10 (where 10 is the most severe).

The Setup: Identifying the Pain

Tap continuously on the Side of the Hand (Karate Chop point) while repeating the following three times:

"Even though I have this tight, heavy pain in my neck and shoulders, I deeply and completely accept myself. Even though my body is holding onto this tension to keep me safe, I am open to letting it go now. Even though this pain feels stuck, I acknowledge how hard I’ve been working and I’m ready to relax."

Round 1: Acknowledging the Discomfort

Tap about 5–7 times on each point while focusing on the physical sensation. By the way YouTube has many EFT tap along videos. Don’t worry about mistakes. You can tap in any order, miss points and even tap in the wrong places, the technique still works.

  • Top of Head: This heavy weight on my shoulders.

  • Eyebrow: This stiffness in my neck.

  • Side of Eye: All this tension I’ve been carrying.

  • Under Eye: It feels like I’m carrying the weight of the world.

  • Under Nose: This sharp, tight sensation.

  • Chin: My muscles feel like they can't let go.

  • Collarbone: All this stress stored in my upper body.

  • Under Arm: This physical reminder of everything I'm juggling.

Round 2: Releasing the "Need" for the Pain

Now, we address the "secondary gains" or the subconscious need to stay on high alert.

  • Top of Head: I’ve been on high alert for so long.

  • Eyebrow: Maybe this pain was trying to protect me.

  • Side of Eye: Maybe it was my excuse to slow down.

  • Under Eye: I thank my body for trying to keep me safe.

  • Under Nose: But I don’t need the pain to set boundaries anymore.

  • Chin: It is safe to feel relaxed and flexible.

  • Collarbone: I am safe enough to let this tension melt away.

  • Under Arm: Releasing the need to carry this weight.

Round 3: Integrating the Reset

This round focuses on the "Mindset Reset" and physical relief.

  • Top of Head: My neck is becoming loose and fluid.

  • Eyebrow: My shoulders are dropping away from my ears.

  • Side of Eye: Breathing light and space into my joints.

  • Under Eye: I choose to react with calm instead of tension.

  • Under Nose: Releasing the old "red alert" signals.

  • Chin: My muscles feel soft and relaxed.

  • Collarbone: Signaling my nervous system that the danger is over.

  • Under Arm: I am free to move with ease.

Did You Feel The Shift?

Take a deep breath in through your nose and exhale fully through your mouth. Check back in with your scale of 0 to 10. If the number has gone down but is still present, you can repeat the process, focusing specifically on any remaining sensations. Remember that pain is also beneficial. It sometimes goes low but does not disappear completely. If this happens, there may be a side issue or a good reason to protect you.

As a precaution, always consult your physician.
